The artist behind the curtain | Bri Smejkal
Bri is an artist, educator, software engineer, and curious human based in Minneapolis.
Her work is guided by a steady, lifelong question: what if? What if a lump of clay becomes a vessel, a texture, a story? What if code could be bent and shaped with the same playfulness as earth, fiber, or wood?
Her practice isn’t tied to a single medium so much as the act of exploration itself. She moves fluidly between ceramics, paint, print, fiber, illustration, and digital tools — following curiosity wherever it leads. Clay is where she often returns: a grounding, tactile practice that asks for patience, humility, and a willingness to let go.
Alongside her studio work, Bri is a software engineer working in 3D technology. While the tools and pace are different, both art and code are rooted in the same impulse — to imagine something unseen and build it into being.
Teaching is a core part of her practice. Through ceramics classes and shared learning spaces, she works to make creativity feel accessible, welcoming, and human. She believes art isn’t about perfection or talent, but about presence — showing up, experimenting, failing, trying again, and finding joy in the process.
Outside the studio, Bri loves foraging (especially when she finds something unexpectedly delicious), paddle boarding on Minnesota lakes, learning for learning’s sake, and disappearing into history rabbit holes. She shares her space with a very sweet, very cuddly cat named Frodo, who is an excellent studio assistant and a firm believer in nap-based productivity.
At the heart of everything Bri does is a belief that creativity belongs to everyone — and that making things, especially together, is one of the best ways to live.
